Flange encoders – How to choose the right encoder

A flange encoder is used for precise measurement of position, speed and rotational movement on electric motors and geared motors. At BJ-Gear, we offer BEGE flange encoders designed for direct mounting on IEC motors and available in several product series depending on the required resolution, operating environment and feedback type.

Our range consists of three main series:

BEGE Basic
BEGE Nova+
BEGE Absolute
All encoders are mounted directly to the rear of the motor and are available with different flange diameters, shaft sizes, cable lengths and pulse resolutions, making them suitable for both new installations and replacement of existing encoders.

What is the difference between BEGE Basic, Nova+ and Absolute?

BEGE Basic

BEGE Basic is the standard encoder in the range and is ideal for general industrial machinery and automation applications where a reliable and cost-effective solution is required.

It provides incremental signals and is commonly used for:

Conveyor systems
Geared motors
Basic positioning applications
Variable frequency drives (VFDs)
Standard automation systems
The Basic series is available in both aluminium and stainless steel.

BEGE Nova+

BEGE Nova+ builds on the Basic series and is designed for applications requiring enhanced reliability, signal processing and performance.

Typical applications include:

Servo systems
Industrial robots
AGV and AMR solutions
High-speed production lines
Machinery with high acceleration requirements
Like the Basic series, Nova+ is available in both aluminium and stainless steel.

BEGE Absolute

An absolute encoder always knows its exact position—even after a power failure. Unlike an incremental encoder, it retains its position after power is restored and therefore does not require a homing sequence.

This makes BEGE Absolute ideal for:

Positioning systems
Automated storage systems
Machines requiring immediate position feedback after start-up
Servo applications
Advanced automation systems
If your machine must always know its exact position without performing a homing procedure after start-up, an absolute encoder is the right choice.
